WHAT IS SATANISM?
Satanism is a modern, non-theistic religion that rejects superstition, while promoting the pursuit of knowledge, pleasure and independence. We do not believe in a literal Satan or god. Instead, we worship ourselves, choosing who we believe deserves our time and respect, while taking care of our own physical and mental health. When we say "Hail Satan" we are saying "Hail me" or "Hail thyself!”
Satan for our organization is a metaphor of our rebellion against fascism and religious nationalism. We fight against the oppression of ourselves and others by engaging in good trouble and using their system against them.
While many view Satanism as "just a political movement," this is not entirely true. Satanism is mostly a religion that focuses on empowerment, protecting our environment, indulgence and seeking knowledge. The belief that Satanism is "just a political movement" is because this is when we are the most visible, as we often keep to ourselves for our own safety. We do not support proselytizing, or making a spectacle of our beliefs, unless we are engaging in political activism for ourselves or a group in need.
SATANISM PROMOTES INDEPENDENCE:
We make our own choices, dress however we want, choose who we respect and spend our time with, and identify with our true name and gender-identity!
SATANISM PROMOTES SEEKING KNOWLEDGE
We seek knowledge on the world around us and ourselves. We make our decisions based on reliable and new science. Seeking knowledge makes us more powerful and free, with the strength to take on dogma and hypocrisy. We refuse to engage in willful ignorance or self-deception!
SATANISM PROMOTES INDULGENCE
We satisfy our indulgences, whether it's eating without shame or engaging in consensual sexual activity, all without shame or guilt. We do not ignore our emotions, instead we engage in self-gratification and worship ourselves. After all, humans are just another animal, fueled by hunger, desire and survival instincts!
SATANISM PROMOTES BODILY AUTONOMY
We take back control of our bodily autonomy. Our bodies and identities belong to us. For example, women must have access to abortion and birth control, children must be protected from corporal punishment, and transgender individuals must have access to gender-affirming care.
SATANISM DENOUNCES FASCISM
Fascism is a dangerous ideology that keeps the most pretentious, solipsistic individuals in power, while oppressing and demonizing minorities and those who refuse to fall in line. Fascism is against everything we stand for and it will destroy us all.
SATANISM DENOUNCES INCOMPETENCE
We do not accept stupidity, incompetence, hypocrisy or excuses, especially from those in higher power. We will not turn the other cheek to incompetence. And if a mistake is made, it must be admitted to and the harm caused must be resolved.
SATANISM DENOUNCES HERD CONFORMITY
We will not follow a crowd just because. It is fine to follow someone's request, but it is another situation to follow the whims of a hoard of sheep just because.
SATANISM ALSO DENOUNCES:
- Losing sight of who you are.
- Taking poor care of nature.
- Violating the rights of others.
- Harming children.
- Lying to yourself.
- Venting to those who do not want to hear it.
- Proselytizing when no one wants to hear it.
MORAL AND ETHICAL CODES:
The Satanic Circle uses The 8 Orders to explain our DOs, The 8 Faults to explain our DO NOTs, and The 8 Satanic Statements to explain what the symbol of Satan means to us.
The punishments for breaking these Orders depend on how and who they are violating. This is because we do not see breaking the Orders as offending a god, but rather an action that violates the health or freedom of yourself or another person. When it comes to violating the health or freedom of another person, there are consequences that The Satanic Circle will issue to violators.
However, we believe morality can be subjective, so while we have these Orders, Faults and Statements, they can change as we seek more knowledge and learn more about the world. We find it childish to call your belief system "the truth," so we do not claim we know everything and what is truly moral. Instead, we go based off of what we know in the present moment, while engaging in good trouble to fight violations of the health or rights of ourselves or others.
RITUALS AND PRACTICES:
We practice our religion constantly by fully embracing life itself; through self-care, spending time with those we love, and pursuing our desires without fear or shame. Because we do not believe in an afterlife, we value our time. We believe our time and energy are sacred, and we dedicate them to creating fulfillment for ourselves and for those closest to us.
Our rituals, whether practiced alone or in community, are centered on empowerment. Many are symbolic acts of liberation, such as "destruction rituals," in which we burn or tear apart objects that have been used to oppress us, such as the Bible. Others are deeply personal and transformative, including "unbaptisms," "gender-affirmation rituals," "abortion rituals," and more. Each ritual affirms the sovereignty of the individual and reclaims power from systems that have sought to deny it.
HOLIDAYS AND TRADITIONS:
Satanists celebrate many different holidays, with some inspiration from Pagan holidays. The holidays often center around empowerment, knowledge, indulgence, the passing of time, or spending time with those you care about.
Satanic holidays include your own birthday, as you are the center of the religion. We also celebrate holidays like Lupercalia, Inverted Lent, All Snakes Day, Yule, Litha and more. We also have observance days where we remember tragic days, like the January 6th Insurrection, the Charlie Hebdo Attack, and the overturning of Roe V Wade. Different Satanic groups may have additional holidays, such as Founding Day or "Unveiling Day.”
SHOULD I BECOME A SATANIST?
Probably not. The religion of Satanism is not for everyone, and for many reasons.
Not everyone resonates with Satanic culture. For many of us, it is rooted in experiences of religious trauma, ostracism, or being branded as “devil— —worshippers” simply for existing outside the norm. We reclaim Satanic symbols and language as a way of transforming that stigma into personal empowerment, rather than to irritate Christians. However, involving yourself in our culture comes with real costs. Satanists are disproportionately harassed, fired, or even assaulted for openly identifying with the religion. If you cannot understand why someone would embrace this identity despite those risks, then Satanism is likely not for you.
If your interest is only in the political action, because it seems "cool" or "edgy," then we encourage you to join other secular activist groups instead. There is nothing "cool" about being a Satanist. What defines us is not aesthetics or shock value, but a commitment to our political, ideological, and empowering principles, knowing full well the societal consequences of doing so. If that resonates with you, deeply and sincerely, then you may find a place with us. Just make sure you research the groups you are considering joining beforehand, as some (like Satanic Delco and O9N) are condemned by most Satanic groups for various reasons.
Whether or not you choose this path for yourself, we encourage you to learn about Satanic culture. Understanding who we are helps dismantle the stereotypes imposed on us by centuries of religious fear and propaganda.
This page discusses the Satanic culture that The Satanic Circle promotes. Feel free to explore other groups, as Satanism, like other religions has a spectrum of beliefs.
